Winter Family Activities
One of the best parts about living in New England is getting to enjoy the fun winter activities that come with the cold weather months. Skiing, ice-skating and sledding are just a few of the most popular past times of families here, which is why it is important for people to understand the safety precautions that are required to make these fun activities safe for everyone.
Taking young children outdoors for these fun winter activities can be a wonderful family experience. However, exposing them to the harsh winter elements can be dangerous if children are not dressed and supervised properly. Always make sure that your children are wearing layers of dry, warm clothing and waterproof apparel such as jackets, boots and gloves before sending them outside to play. Like the right apparel, adult supervision is an essential element to keeping children safe during winter activities. Without proper instruction and supervision children can incur serious or even fatal injuries from activities such as skating and sledding. Be sure that if your children are taking part in these fun winter activities that they understand the proper ways to stay safe.
If your children are going sledding, be sure to bring them to an easy sloping hill with few obstructions. The proper sledding area should also be far from any place where a child may cross paths with traffic. It’s also important to outfit your child with the right safety apparel, such as helmets and knee pads, no matter what level of “expertise” they have. Wearing an approved helmet that fits correctly can be all the difference between walking away from a collision or ending up with a severe injury.
